Extremely Rare 20 Cents with Dragon and Rosettes Obverse (t) CHINA. Kirin. 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens (20 Cents), CD (1908). Kirin Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. L&M-581; K-578 (this coin illustrated & cited in note, p. 178); KM-Y-181C; cf. WS-0540 (for dragon side) & WS-0534/4 (for characters side). Variety with "2" in center of characters side and with seven-tailed dragon. An EXTREMELY RARE Kirin Minor, with this being the first offering of this L&M number we could trace selling in the past few decades. Kann relayed in 1954 a value of $300; and in 1966 $1000; while also stating "the only specimen known is in the author's collection." This example emanating from the Kann collection, provides sharp details, with only modest evidence of the cleaning noted by PCGS. Kann calls this an "essay" -- while most would consider it a mule in the modern numismatic context -- which mates a dragon's side with rosettes and a characters' side with a central numeral "2". Terminology aside, it is doubtlessly of the HIGHEST RARITY, and certain to be sought by any Kirin collector. Estimate: $50,000 - $55,000. Provenance: From the Robin C S Cheng (鄭鎮新) Collection.
