Elaborate 1920 Tientsin $5 (t) CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. 5 Dollars, 1.1.1920. P-S382. S/M#Y13. PMG Very Fine 20. Tientsin. Printed by Waterlow and Sons. This elaborately designed 5 Dollar note from Tientsin is in a style similar to that of notes issued for Hong Kong between 1909 and 1923. A harmonious blend of Chinese and Western allegorical figures, set against a dazzling mix of red and orange colours, yields instantly recognisable notes prized by many collectors. The lower left is neatly and clearly signed by hand, while the lower right shows a printed signature of A.B. Lowson. The reverse is in the same design as those for Hong Kong, which shows the HSBC Building there. A beautifully designed note. The 1920 dated note is actually a bit more difficult to find than the 1907 dated note and certainly more difficult in higher grades. An exceptional opportunity for the collector of 'Foreign Banks' that would fit into any advanced collection. PMG Comments "Repaired, Minor Rust." Estimate: $2,400 - $3,600.
