Sword - Iron (cast/wrought) - Indonesia (No reserve price)

West Javanese / Sundanese traditional sword Pedang-/saber-type sword – presumably Sumedang region, possibly Cikeruh/Cipacing Work dating: late 19th century to first half of the 20th century | Total length: 75 cm | Blade: 56 cm 1. Summary and object data Object: traditionally single-edged sword / short saber. Likely culture/region: Sundanese, West Java; Sumedang region. Working designation: pedang-/saber-type; related to the West Javanese golok/klewang tradition. Total length: 75 cm. Blade: 56 cm long; maximum width ca. 3 cm. Grip: dark wood, hand-carved zoomorphic bird-head. Scabbard: carved wood with multiple brass bands. Maker mark: worn maker/workshop mark; not yet reliably read. Work dating: probably ca. 1890-1940; exact dating not established. 2. Provisional identification The combination of the long, slender single-edged blade, the hand-done-looking fuller, the pronounced bird-head grip, the carved wooden scabbard and the brass fittings convincingly place it within the traditional weapon production of West Java. The Sumedang region – with Cikeruh (historical Tjikeroeh) and the nearby Cipacing/Tjipatjing – is a strong candidate. A definitive Cikeruh attribution requires specialist assessment. 3. Final conclusion Completely traditional West Javanese/Sundanese single-edged sword of pedang-/saber-type, probably Sumedang region and possibly belonging to the Cikeruh-Cipacing weapon-smith tradition. Steel blade of 56 cm with long fuller and worn maker/workshop mark; total length 75 cm; hand-carved wooden bird-head grip; matching, likely original carved wooden scabbard with brass fittings. Work dating: late 19th century to first half of the 20th century (ca. 1890-1940), yet to be confirmed by a specialist. 5.
