SWEDEN. 2 Mark Klippe, 1568. Vadstena Mint. Dukes Johan (III) and Karl (IX). NGC EF-45. SM-3a; Delzanno-4; Bruun-11557. Weight: 6.25 gms. Mintmaster: Mickel Hansson. Extremely rare with only about five known in private collections. Wonderfully toned and with good eye-appeal. The Dukes Johan and Karl were brothers of Erik XIV. Erik had become increasingly paranoid and had many of the Swedish nobility executed. Following one such execution, Erik paid 1,000 Mark silver to the grieving widow, Märta Lejonhuvud. She lent them to the king's brothers Johan and Karl, financing their uprising and helping depose the king. The Klippes issued by Johan and Karl are struck from that very silver, and the coinage is often referred to as 'Blood Klippes'. Estimate: €5,000 - €8,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Ole Devegge Collection (Copenhagen - 1851, 1867) Lot # 5681. To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E.
