Stunning Necklace Made of Large South Sea Pearls with a Gold Clasp

This necklace is a spectacular sight. Two dozen large, silvery-gray pearls are strung in a graduated pattern. Each pearl has a unique, baroque, elongated shape. Their surfaces possess a very good luster and an iridescent sheen that shifts between pink and blue-green, so that their appearance changes with every movement. These large treasures of the sea, measuring up to 2.8 cm in length, are held together by a large clasp made of high-karat gold in the shape of a star. Its surface is matte-finished so as not to compete too much with the pearls’ luster. At the same time, however, the star is naturally the crowning touch of the design. This allows the necklace to be worn with the clasp at the nape of the neck or to the side. South Sea pearls are among the most precious and largest of all cultured pearls. The silver-lipped oyster Pinctada maxima, in which these pearls grow, thrives only in the crystal-clear waters of the tropically warm lagoons of the South Seas. Unlike freshwater pearls, which are cultivated in Asia on former rice paddies, only a few pearls grow at a time in South Sea oysters, and it takes several years for a pearl to mature inside the oyster. They are correspondingly rare and precious. The necklace comes from the studio of Stuttgart-based goldsmith Günter Krauss and is a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted piece. It came to us from a prominent Stuttgart collection. It is accompanied by an appraisal certifying the quality of the pearls.
