Magnificent and rare antique Moroccan chest (Maghreb) in wood covered with a copper framework on large domed-headed nails, late 19th / early 20th century (period 1880 - 1920) Wedding chest (sunduq) of North African origin, most likely Moroccan, dating from the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. These marriage chests, traditionally offered to the young bride and intended to hold her trousseau, textiles, and precious objects, occupied an important place in Maghrebi furnishings. Its solid wood structure is entirely clad with copper plates and reinforcements from the period, cut into panels and securely fixed by numerous large hemispherical domed nails. The metal displays a beautiful natural patina in brown-copper and golden tones, speckled with traces of oxidation and remnants of red paint characteristic of old wedding chests. The lid, hinged by metal hinges, is accompanied by a central hasp lock (key absent); the interior, for its part, remains simple and rough, made of dark wooden boards not lined. Its dimensions are particularly striking for this type of object: 41 cm in length, 36.5 cm in height and 24 cm in depth. This compact size, rarer than the larger bed or travel chests, makes it ideal as a decorative or prestigious storage piece. True Maghrebi wedding chests from this era, fully plated, are particularly rare. Most examples offered today are modern reproductions, Tunisian-style painted models, or the more standard “Zanzibar” chests. The overall condition is very good for a piece of its age. The patina and wear are honest and consistent with its history, the structure remains solid, and no major restoration is apparent. This wedding chest lends itself perfectly to strong decorative use (end table, coffee table edge, or console), for storing jewelry, documents, or mementos, or simply to integrate into an ethnic art collection."
