Steppenwolf is a rock group from the 1960s and 1970s. This band was formed by members of Sparrow, a Canadian band. When Sparrow's frontman, John Kay, along with other band members, emigrated to the U.S., they changed the band's name to Steppenwolf in Los Angeles, California. Their most famous songs are "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Born to Be Wild," both released in 1968. "Born to Be Wild" also became a hit in film after its appearance in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, directed by Dennis Hopper. They took their name from the novel Steppenwolf by German writer Hermann Hesse, published in 1927. Steppenwolf is considered one of the pioneers of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, along with bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin, Blue Cheer, The Kinks, and Deep Purple, as their style included the use of distorted electric guitars and lyrics that addressed themes of freedom and rebellion. Steppenwolf traces its origins to the Toronto blues band The Sparrows, formed in 1964, which played in cafes in the Yorkville neighborhood. In 1967, the band relocated to San Francisco, California, where they began playing folk music. It was producer Gabriel Mekler of Dunhill Records in Los Angeles who suggested they toughen up their sound, which ultimately led them towards hard rock and transformed them into Steppenwolf. In fact, the term "heavy metal" was taken from a line in the song "Born to Be Wild." Their original lineup consisted of John Kay (vocals and guitar), Jerry Edmonton (drums), Michael Monarch (guitar), Goldie McJohn (keyboards), and Rushton Moreve (bass). In 1968, Nick St. Nicholas, who had previously played with The Sparrows, replaced Rushton Moreve on bass. Their third single, "Born to Be Wild," catapulted them to fame, reaching number 2 on the Billboard charts; a year later it was featured in the film Easy Rider. The song was written by Mars Bonfire (Dennis Edmonton), a former member of Sparrow and brother of Jerry. John Kay would later declare: "Every generation thinks they were born to be wild, and they identify this song as their anthem." Their success continued with songs like "Magic Carpet Ride" from Steppenwolf the Second (1968) and "Rock Me" from At Your Birthday Party (1969). In 1970, at the height of their success, they released what many fans consider their best album: the double LP Steppenwolf Live. The album was released between Monster (1969) and Steppenwolf 7 (1970), the band's most politically charged albums, in which they criticized American politics during the Nixon era. Their success continued with songs like "Magic Carpet Ride" from Steppenwolf the Second (1968) and "Rock Me" from At Your Birthday Party (1969). The band broke up in 1971, after the release of the also political For Ladies Only album.
