Stele of Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音 dated 1752 - Granite - Japan - Mid Edo period

A charming mid-Edo period stone votive stele depicting Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音, one of the esoteric manifestations of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Kannon is carved in relief, seated in the characteristic contemplative pose with the head gently inclined towards the raised hand, giving the sculpture a quiet and deeply contemplative character .A beautiful natural accumulation of lichen has developed across the weathered stone surface over time, adding shades of green and further enhancing the stele’s wonderful sense of age and authenticity. Nyoirin Kannon takes its name from the nyoi 如意, the wish-fulfilling jewel (cintāmaṇi), and rin 輪, the Wheel of the Dharma (dharmacakra). Alongside the figure is the Buddhist inscription 願速圓成 (gan soku enjō), expressing the wish that one’s prayer or vow may be swiftly brought to fulfilment. This inscription is particularly appropriate for Nyoirin Kannon, a manifestation of Kannon traditionally associated with the fulfilment of wishes and prayers. The stele bears a dated inscription corresponding Hōreki 2 宝暦二年 (1752) , placing it firmly in the mid-Edo period. Stone images such as this were erected as devotional monuments at temples, along pilgrimage routes, beside roads and within village communities. Exposed to the elements for generations, their weathered surfaces have become an integral part of their character. s. Period: Edo period, Hōreki 2 宝暦二年 (1752) Dimensions: Height 50 cm, Width 26 cm, Depth 16 cm Condition: Good antique condition with considerable weathering, surface wear and patination consistent with age and outdoor use. Please refer to the photographs for the condition. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
