Statue, Enfant Jésus sur le globe - GOA - XVIII ème + Cites - 22 cm - Ivory

Child Jesus on the globe – Indo-Portuguese ivory sculpture – GOA - 18th century – CITES NO EXPORT OUTSIDE THE EU. Rare religious sculpture representing the Child Jesus standing on the Earth globe, Indo-Portuguese work from the 18th century. The Child Jesus, carved in ivory, is depicted nude, standing in a blessing or majestic pose. His face with soft features, finely incised hair, and the characteristic proportions are in keeping with the tradition of Christian ivories produced in territories under Portuguese influence. It rests on an ancient, formerly polychromed globe, itself borne by a substantial carved wooden base, pierced and polychromed, with a dynamic vegetal motif. The ensemble retains a beautiful old patina as well as significant traces of its original polychromy, particularly visible on the globe and the pedestal. The iconography of the Child Jesus on the world expresses the universal sovereignty of Christ and constitutes a theme especially developed in Indo-Portuguese Christian art. Indo-Portuguese, 18th century. Ivory, carved and polychromed wood. Old condition with slight wear and gaps in polychromy, small defects and ancient restorations visible. Patina and signs of use in keeping with the age of the object. See detailed photographs. The work is accompanied by its CITES certificate, no. IT/CE/2024/BG/00862, issued in Bergamo on December 12, 2024, which identifies the species as Elephantidae spp. and explicitly describes the object as a “ivory sculpture on a wooden base representing the Child Jesus on the world, Indo-Portuguese manufacture, 18th century.” Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment. The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery. Happy bidding
