Standing brass Buddha – teaching mudra – lotus pedestal –...

This impressive 59 cm tall brass Buddha figure shows Buddha standing in a erect, dignified posture on an artfully designed, multi-tiered lotus pedestal. The representation follows traditional Thai Buddhist art from Thailand and Southeast Asia. Notably striking are the slim body form, the calm face with half-closed eyes, the long earlobes, and the finely worked hair curls with the flame-shaped crown. Both arms are bent in front of the torso. The right hand is raised and displays a symbolic gesture of the fingers, reminiscent of a teaching gesture. The left hand is beneath it and is also shaped in a expressive gesture. The long, flowing robe drapes over the left shoulder and falls in decorative folds down to the knees. The partly polished brass surface has a warm, golden sheen. Darker shadows and patinations emphasize the three-dimensional details. The richly decorated pedestal is adorned with stylized lotus petals and lends the figure a harmonious overall impression. The figure comes from an inherited collection of Asian art and decorative objects.
