Spectacular Muricidae Rare 156 mm Alabaster Murex...

Magnificent collection specimen of Siratus alabaster (Reeve, 1845), internationally known as Alabaster Murex, with a length of 156 mm. This spectacular shell belongs to the Muricidae family and is one of the most elegant and instantly recognizable species of the genus Siratus. Its natural architecture is characterized by a robust, fusiform central body, surrounded by broad wing-like varices, thin radial lamellae, and long spiniform processes that extend in several directions. The coloration ranges from alabaster white to ivory, with delicate cream and pale yellow shades following the growth lines. The wide, bright aperture, the elongated siphonal canal, and the almost sculptural arrangement of the spines give the specimen an extraordinarily dynamic presence. Siratus alabaster lives in the deep waters of the western Pacific, mainly between southern Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. It is a predatory marine gastropod belonging to the Muricidae family, adapted to life on deep-sea beds. The species also holds a special place in the history of conchology. The first known specimen was collected in the Philippines by Hugh Cuming during the 19th century and remained a great rarity in natural history collections for a long time. The subsequent introduction of deep-water nets made it possible to find better-preserved specimens, allowing collectors to fully appreciate the species’ intricate structure. With its 156 mm, this specimen exceeds the length commonly indicated for the species and constitutes a refined collectible object, ideal for a marine shell collection, a Wunderkammer, or an exhibition dedicated to natural history. The wing expansions and spines of Muricidae are naturally very thin and delicate. Please therefore study the images carefully, as they are an integral part of the description.
