Specimen of Copal - Natural - Young Amber Copale - Height...

Madagascar Copal – Fossil Resin — A Madagascar copal specimen with a natural and organic shape, polished and translucent, that highlights an intricate play of plant inclusions and internal bubbles. The warm color, ranging from golden to amber-brown, captures light with great intensity, offering a vivid and dynamic appearance. Copal is a fossil resin of plant origin, considered the intermediate stage between fresh resin and true amber. Unlike amber, which can be tens of millions of years old, copal is generally younger, ranging from a few thousand to a few million years. Nevertheless, it preserves its natural beauty and scientific allure intact. Madagascar is one of the world's main sources of copal. The resins come from trees in the Leguminosae family, particularly Hymenaea species, the same botanical family that through geological ages has produced Caribbean amber as well. The resin flows, originally produced as a defensive mechanism of the plant, fell to the ground, incorporating vegetal material and sometimes small organisms. Over time and under environmental conditions, these resins fossilized, transforming into the copal we know today. A striking piece, ideal for enriching naturalistic, museum, or cabinet de curiosités collections.
