SPAIN. Viceroyalty of New Spain. 1788-Mo FM 8 Reales. Mexico City Mint. Calico-1132, Yonaka-M8-88, KM-106.2a. AU-58 (PCGS). Uncommonly well struck for this challenging type, both sides boast virtually full detail in the absence of significant rub. The surfaces are toned in dominant pewter gray, the obverse with mottled overlying olive-blue and reddish-gold, the reverse with blushes of reddish-apricot and cobalt blue that are mostly confined to the periphery. Underlying hairlines are noted for accuracy, more so on the reverse, but the in-hand appearance is pleasingly smooth in the absence of sizeable or otherwise singularly distracting marks. Like so many Spanish colonial silver types, the C3 portrait 8 reales is seldom encountered with solid technical quality and strong eye appeal.
