Southern Mammoth - Fossil teeth - Mammuthus meridionalis - 12.5 cm - 10 cm

In this lot, a large mammoth molar (12.5 x 10 cm) of the species Mammuthus meridionalis, colloquially known as the Southern Mammoth, is being auctioned. Very good overall preservation, it lacks a fragment on one side, crown crests on the abrasion surface, softened by wear from the animal's use. It comes from Pest County, the Ráckeve region, Hungary, and dates to the Pleistocene; this particular piece is estimated to be between 0.6 and 1 million years old. M. meridionalis is one of the early mammoth genera, with a height of about 4 m at the shoulders and an estimated weight of 10 to 11 tons, making it one of the largest proboscideans that have lived. Its molars had low crowns and a number of 10 to 14 thick enamel edges, adapted to a forest diet of leaves and branches. The last records of this species date to about 125,000 years ago. It is a spectacular piece, "it's impressive to hold it in your hands" "A fossil is included as a gift with the purchase of this piece"
