In this lot, a very large mammoth molar (12.5 x 10 cm) of the species Mammuthus meridionalis, colloquially known as the Southern Mammoth, is up for auction. Very good overall preservation, a fragment is missing on one side, crown crests on the wear surface, softened by use wear from the animal. It comes from Pest County, Ráckeve region, (Hungary) and corresponds to the Pleistocene epoch; this piece in particular should be between 0.6 and 1 million years old. M. meridionalis is one of the earliest mammoth genera, with a height of about 4 m at the shoulders and an estimated weight of 10 to 11 tons, making it one of the largest proboscideans that ever lived. Its molars had low crowns and a number of between 10 and 14 edges of thick enamel, adapted to a forest diet of leaves and branches. The last records of this species date from about 125,000 years ago.
