This 17th/18th-century panel depicts the First Passover (Exodus 12), a crucial Old Testament narrative heavily favored in Counter-Reformation art as the primary theological prefiguration (foreshadowing) of the Last Supper and the Eucharist. Departing from the typical dark chiaroscuro of the Italian Baroque, this Central European master employs a clear, even illumination rooted in Northern Renaissance and Flemish traditions. This light captures the traditional iconographic elements of the biblical text with meticulous precision: the Israelite family members are depicted in strict accordance with scripture—standing in solemn haste, holding travel staffs, their robes girded for their imminent flight from Egypt. The painting's true originality lies in how it frames this sacred ritual. Instead of laying out the scene conventionally, the artist places a prominent character dead-center, viewed entirely from behind, who deliberately obscures most of the sacrificial table. By hiding the sacred elements—the lamb and unleavened bread—behind this central repoussoir figure, the artist treats the prefiguration of the Last Supper as a veiled sacrament. Structurally, this back-turned figure cuts through the bright light to generate powerful three-dimensional depth. Conceptually, it acts as an anonymous visual surrogate for the viewer; we stand directly behind them in suspense, drawn into the center of the room to witness the hidden mystery of the meal unfold.
