SONGYE KIFWEBE MASK

Ca. 19th - 20th century AD > A Songye kifwebe mask with a domed forehead, raised central crest and strongly projecting nose and mouth. Contrasting pale and dark striations follow the contours of the face. Songye kifwebe masks were performed by members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe association. Their striations, projecting features and, in many male forms, powerful crests create a visual language of controlled spiritual and social force. > > Size: 395mm x 240mm; Weight: 850g > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex.
