Miniature radio Phonola 547 designed in 1939 by Pier Giacomo and Livio Castiglioni and Luigi Caccia Dominioni for Phonola in the wonderful black color. Reproduction of the very famous 1930s phone-shaped model that constitutes one of the examples of Italian industrial design. Tested and working. Perfect conditions. Historical notes: Guglielmo Marconi's 1896 patent for wireless telegraph system (Wireless Telegraph) for transmitting impulses suitable for Morse code opened the way to long-distance wireless communications. The transmission of sounds was later made possible with the invention of the vacuum tube (valve) by the English Sir John Ambrose Fleming in 1904. In 1906 came the Audion (vacuum triode) by the American Lee De Forest. The invention of the superheterodyne, patented in 1918 by Edwin H. Armstrong but subsequently credited to Lucien Levy, made frequency modulation possible. In the 1920s and 1930s devices began to spread into homes. They were made without frugality and with particular attention to the elegance of the devices: wooden furniture, external control knobs, external valves, frame antenna and horn speaker. Technological development later led to better circuits and valves and thus better reception, internal magnetodynamic or electrodynamic speakers, reception not only in amplitude modulation but also in frequency (1939). The first radios were mainly wooden and were true furnishings objects: furniture, consoles, trinkets. In 1930 a new material, Bakelite, began to appear in the realization of various items and around 1940 started to replace ebonite in the casings of radio receivers. It was the designers who conceived the first radios with these new materials. Later Bakelite was also replaced with plastic materials of various types and even more flexible characteristics. The radio receiver in question, named
