SMALL "SAINT GEORGE, IN TEMPESTATE SECURITAS" MEDAL IN YELLOW GOLD, 20th CENTURY 18k yellow gold medal, eagle-head hallmark, depicting Saint George slaying the dragon on one side and a ship with the inscription "In tempestate securitas" on the other. Bears the initials "GD" and an inscription yet to be deciphered. Diameter: approx. 2 cm Weight: 5.6 g Good condition Saint George, patron saint of knights, protects travelers on horseback, while Saint James, the great navigator and protector of ships, protects those traveling by sea. Saint George was the protector of travelers and pilgrims, particularly those making the journey to Santiago de Compostela. We would also add that this medal could be considered the pre-Revolutionary equivalent of the Saint Christopher medals sometimes found in taxis, which protect drivers and passengers. Based on its style, we believe it was made between the 16th century and the very early 20th century.
