Front pastedown with Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr's bookplate with facsimile signature and a description; 'From the library of Oliver Wendell Holmes. The gift of his son Oliver Wendell Holmes.' EXTRAORDINARY PROVENANCE TRAIL Presentation copy from the author Thomas MacKellar to Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., influential poet, author, physician and polymath. Thomas Kellar was highly regarded in his own right. He wrote the best-selling book on typography of all time and also popular Presbyterian hymns, many of which are still in use today. Upon the death of Holmes Sr. in 1894, many of his non-medical books were donated to Boston Public Library by his son, famed Civil War hero and renowned Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. This copy has the bookplate of Library of the Berkshire on the FFEP which indicates it is from the library of Oliver Wendell Holmes. Book Condition: Very Good BOOK INFO Published in 1889 by Porter & Coates in Philadelphia. Second edition, enlarged. Bound in original beveled red publisher cloth with gilt lettering. All edges stained red. Floral decorated, finely woven, silk-textured endpapers. Duodecimo, 7.5" x 5". Collated and complete: pp. [ix], 10-217, [1] (blank). Frontispiece of the author. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Thomas MacKellar (1812-1899) was an American printer, type?founder, and poet whose career spanned both the printing industry and devotional literature. He co-founded MacKellar, Smiths & Jordan in 1860, which became one of the leading type?manufacturing firms in the United States. MacKellar was instrumental in elevating the craft of printing. He edited The Typographic Advertiser from 1855 to 1884, advocating for better working conditions, including the founding of an asylum for aged printers. His 1866 book The American Printer became the most popular work on typography ever printed, with an 18th edition in 1893. In his later years, MacKellar turned to poetry, writing with a devotional spirit and a tender regard for family and friendship. Some of his hymns are still in common use, such as In the Vineyard of Our Father; Jesus! When My Soul Is Parting; There Is a Land Immortal and many others. ABOUT OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES JR. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841 - 1935) was a highly influential U.S. Supreme Court justice, legal scholar, and Civil War veteran, renowned for his contributions to American constitutional law and free speech doctrine. Holmes attended Harvard College, graduating in 1861, and served in the Union Army during the Civil War, where he was wounded three times and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the war, Holmes studied law at Harvard Law School, earning his degree in 1866, and began practicing law in Boston. He also lectured at Harvard and later served on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, becoming Chief Justice in 1899. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he served until his retirement in 1932 at the age of 90, the oldest justice in the Court's history. Holmes is best known for his legal philosophy emphasizing judicial restraint and deference to legislative decisions, as well as his influential opinions on civil liberties. His writings and opinions have had a lasting impact on American constitutional law, particularly regarding freedom of speech and the balance between individual rights and government authority. ABOUT OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES SR. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (1809 - 1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the fireside poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. He gained national fame with his poem 'Old Ironsides' (1830), which helped preserve the USS Constitution. His most famous prose works are the 'Breakfast-Table' series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to being an author and a poet, Holmes was also a physician, professor, lecturer, and inventor. Surrounded by Boston's literary elite-which included friends such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and James Russell Lowell-Holmes made an indelible imprint on the literary world of the 19th century. Many of his works were published in The Atlantic Monthly, a magazine that he named. For his literary achievements and other accomplishments, he was awarded numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world. CONDITON REPORT The book is in VERY GOOD condition. Exterior and binding: Firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Sun-faded spine. Soiling to cloth. Rubbed edges, corners a bit worn. Some fading to fore-edge red stain, top edge darkened (per usual). Signs of a label removal at foot of spine. Interior: Text pages are clean, bright and white. Toned blanks. Minimal signs of handling beyond some occasional light marginal finger soiling. Library bookplate on FFEP, no other library markings. Superficial cracking of front endpaper gutter paper. No foxing. Some very light dust to top margin on occasion. All in all, a personalized, signed book of hymns from the noted author Thomas MacKellar to Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr, a book that was donated by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. to Boston Public Library after his father's passing. A lovely provenance trail of libraries, esteemed authors and prominent statesmen.
