Sierlijke Jugendstil wandbarometer met thermometer –...

Elegant Art Nouveau wall barometer with thermometer – red-brown wood and brass-colored ornaments – probably circa 1900–1920 A atmospherically evocative piece of weather history for the wall. This decorative barometer combines a long slender wooden housing with lacy openwork contours and geometric metal ornaments. The warm reddish-brown wood tone forms a beautiful contrast with the light dial plates and gold-colored accents. The round barometer immediately draws the eye. Through the open center of the dial a portion of the mechanism is visible: an attractive technical detail that gives the instrument extra depth. The Dutch-language indicators ‘Storm’, ‘Rain or wind’, ‘Variable’, ‘Fine weather’ and ‘Stable’ give the dial its historic appearance. Above the barometer is a slim thermometer with a scale in Celsius and Fahrenheit. The graceful side contours, cut top edge and rhythmically arranged ornaments bring both instruments together in one balanced composition. On the metal back plate of the thermometer there is a stamped emblem that resembles a winged mythical creature. The manufacturer has not yet been identified. The brand forms an interesting detail for enthusiasts and collectors of historic measuring instruments. Technique and decoration An aneroid barometer records changes in air pressure via a sensitive metal element and a mechanical transfer to the needle. Such instruments brought weather monitoring into the domestic interior and were often made as decorative wall pieces. The openwork design and geometric embellishments align with the Art Nouveau style from the early twentieth century. The dating of this specimen to circa 1900–1920 is a stylistic estimate. A characterful addition to a hall, study, or classic interior, where technology and decorative design meet beautifully. Features * Wall barometer with integrated thermometer. * Aneroid barometer with partially visible mechanism. * Dutch language weather indicators. * Thermometer scale in Celsius and Fahrenheit. * Red-brown wooden housing with openwork details. * Brass-colored geometric metal ornaments. * Embossed emblem on the metal back plate of the thermometer. * Hanging eye at the top. * Style: Art Nouveau / Jugendstil. * Estimated period: circa 1900–1920. Condition Used condition with clear signs of use and age. The wood shows scratches, wear, discolorations and minor edge damage. The metal parts have patina and localized oxidation. The light dial plates show aging signs and fine lines. At the bottom there is an old repair in the wood. The crack/glue seam and dark repair traces are visible under the round barometer, next to the lower metal ornament. At the bottom there are also small damages and localized material loss. The operation and accuracy of the barometer and thermometer have not been tested.
