Shelley (Mary Wollstonecraft) Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, fifth English edition, half-title, advertisement endpapers and pastedowns, neat ink ownership inscription to head of title, light browning to endpapers, original pink blind-stamped cloth, slight shelf-lean, chipping and fraying to spine and extremities, toning to spine, some spotting and a few marks, 32mo Halifax, Milner and Sowerby, 1865. *** Scarce edition, only 2 copies on Library Hub (University of Leeds and York Minster). "Issued in The Cottage Library series by this UK based firm. The first imprint of this edition carries the original title, while the reprint issues changed the title to the more dramatic Frankenstein – The Modern Man-Demon [see following lot]. The name of the publisher had changed to Milner and Co. by the time of the reissues in 1875 and approximately 1879... One interesting detail is that this edition comprises the original 1818 edition, which was not typical in the UK. Although a substantial number of copies were likely printed, survivors are now quite uncommon – obviously due to the small, fragile format." - Tornquist, Tracing Frankenstein.
