Large Chinese Ming-Style Four-Panel Wooden Bench (4-Bay Bench) – 215 cm (1910-1930) Rare and imposing Chinese wooden bench with a four-part backrest (4-bay / 4-seat bench), designed in the classic Ming tradition. With an impressive length of 215 cm, this is a very substantial piece of furniture that stands out for its elegant, clean architectural lines and refined craftsmanship. Benches of this size with four linked back panels are considerably rarer than the standard two- or three-seat variants and were originally manufactured for the reception halls (guest halls) of wealthy Chinese families. Stylistic Features & Design Classic Juk Design (Yokeback): The upper rail of the backrest displays the characteristic wavy juk form above each of the four panels, inspired by the historical official hat that symbolized status and authority. Carved Polychrome Medallions: Each of the four vertical back panels (splats) features a recessed, circular medallion (roundel). They bear refined floral relief details with subtle polychrome red-gold accents. Elegant Details: The bench features gracefully curved armrests and a sleek, sturdy base with surrounding stretchers and subtle aprons under the framework. Rich Patina: Made from a dark Asian hardwood with a brilliant lived-in patina and authentic signs of age that lend the piece its historic character. Versatility & Depth With a generous seat depth of approx. 67 cm, this bench reflects the traditional Chinese lounge tradition (such as Luohan or Kang beds), where one sat with legs drawn up or in a crossed pose.
