Offered for auction is a very special and coherent set of ten traditional arrows from the Yapen–Waropen region of Geelvink Bay, present-day Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua. The complete set was field collected in 1959. The arrows were collected by a doctor who was living and working in the area at the time, providing medical services to the local population. This gives the group an interesting and unusually specific provenance. The ten arrows have remained together as one collection since 1959. Each arrow was individually made and the set shows differences in the shape and construction of the points. Traditional arrows in the Geelvink Bay region were produced for different purposes, particularly hunting and fishing, and their form could vary according to their intended use. The arrows are fine examples of the considerable skill involved in producing functional weapons entirely from locally available materials. The age and long preservation of the complete group are particularly attractive. Rather than being a collection assembled from individual arrows at a later date, these ten examples were collected together in the field in 1959 and have remained as a single set. Origin: Yapen–Waropen region, Geelvink Bay, West Papua. Material: wood and other natural materials. Date: before 1959. Provenance: field collected in 1959 by a doctor working among the local population. Condition: good ethnographic condition with signs of age and use consistent with their history. A rare and historically interesting group with an excellent early field provenance, and a fine addition to a collection of West Papuan material culture, traditional weapons or Oceanic art.
