Alexander II Zabinas rose as a rival claimant during a succession crisis, but Antiochos VIII defeated him and restored his own rule. That victory brought little stability: Antiochos IX, Antiochos VIII’s half-brother and rival, later contested the kingdom, whose prolonged civil war divided territory, drained royal power and hastened the fragmentation of central authority.
