Work with gilded frame (flaws and cracks): We present in the catalog an interesting oil on canvas of good quality, depicting a Nordic beach captured during a day of intense fishing activity. In the foreground, on the left, stand out two figures, a man and a woman, depicted in traditional local costumes and wooden clogs. In the center, a female figure with her back observes the scene, wrapped in a typical dark cloak. On the right, a flat-bottom fishing boat is beached on the sand and surrounded by fishermen busy unloading nets and the catch, stored inside large baskets. In the second plane and in the background, along the coast, a lively scene of a fish market or unloading of goods unfolds, animated by horse-drawn carts and several large fishing boats with sails lowered. On the horizon, against the dunes, the roofs of some fishermen’s huts and small warehouses are visible. The sky is dominated by large clouds heavy with moisture, ranging in tones from cream white to gray-blue, contributing to the variable character typical of the Atlantic climate. The sunlight, filtering through the cloud cover, creates delicate atmospheric effects on the surface of the sea and the beach. The work fits fully into mid-19th-century landscape painting, with particular attention to plein air painting. The interest in atmospheric effects, the rendering of natural light filtered by the clouds, and the reflections on the calm sea suggest a direct study of the landscape from nature, in a sensibility akin to masters such as Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind. The brushwork, rapid and tactile, intentionally remains visible, especially in the rendering of the foreground figures, the boats, and the sea foam. The definition of details does not conform to a strictly academic approach, but aims to convey the immediate impression of movement, light, and air density. The palette is dominated by earth tones, grays, ochre, sandy blues, and softened blues used in both the sky and the figures’ clothing. Intervening this color range are small touches of more intense color, such as the red of the bodice and the cobalt blue of the jacket on the right, used effectively to guide the viewer’s gaze through the composition. Regarding the condition, the canvas presents overall fair condition consistent with the period of execution. The painting’s surface retains a pleasant antique patina and good saturation of dark pigments, helping to preserve the evocative atmosphere of the work. The dimensions of the work are cm. 52 x 79.
