Scuola emiliana (XVII) - Orazione nell'Orto del Getsemani

Subject: Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane with the Angel of Passion and the sleeping Apostles • Era: 17th century (Seventeenth Century) School / milieu: Emilian School (baroque painting from the Bologna/Emilia area) Technique: Oil on canvas Conservation status: Excellent structural state. The work has undergone a professional re-stretching and recent re-lining on a modern cradle with adjustable wedges ensuring perfect tension and preservation of the canvas over time. The painted surface presents as stable, with a splendid patina and the characteristic contemporaneous craquelure. Small targeted previous restorations are present, revealed during consolidation operations. Dimensions of the work: • Canvas only: 80 x 60 cm With frame: 100 x 80 cm Frame: Included in the lot as a gift, in a panel moulding with elegant gilding. Historical-artistic description of the work: A precious and imposing oil painting on canvas depicting one of the most dramatic and expressive moments of the Passion of Christ: the Prayer in Gethsemane. The composition unfolds on multiple diagonal registers typical of Baroque painting: in the upper left stands the luminous figure of the angel bearing the cup of martyrdom; in the center, wrapped in a warm red tunic, Jesus is depicted kneeling in an attitude of intense and pathetical prayer. At the bottom of the canvas lie the three apostles (Peter, James, and John), overcome by sleep and swathed in draperies with rich chromatic nuances. Stylistic characteristics, the dramatic use of chiaroscuro contrasts, and the handling of the faces decisively recall the fortunate Emilian painting tradition of the Seicento, deeply influenced by the naturalistic and classicist revolution of the Carracci. A work of great visual impact, of ideal size for both private collecting and high interior decoration. The painting will be shipped with reinforced professional packaging tracked and insured.
