Todas las subastas / Esculturas / Sculpture, "Venere Italica" After Canova - 38 cm - Marble or Alabaster

Sculpture in the round in alabastrine marble dating from around 1900, produced within the Italian sphere of Grand Tour statuary. The work depicts the Italic Venus according to the iconography devised by Antonio Canova in 1812, derived from the classical model of the Medici Venus. The female figure is depicted standing with a flexed body, captured in the act of holding a drapery to the chest that wraps the hips and runs down along the lower limbs, flanked at the base by an element. The sculpture rests on a contemporaneous circular base carved from the same stone block, with chisel-work visible on the lower plane. There are no signatures or maker’s marks. CONDITIONS: The object is in very good overall condition. There are slight and natural intrinsic veins of the stone, minimal surface abrasions and small deposits of dust/patina from time. The circular edge of the base shows some chipping and perimetral losses compatible with the era and use. Solid structure and free from restorations or visible breaks to the figure. DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT: Height: about 38 cm. Base diameter: 10.6 cm. Weight: 2710 g. NOTES: The Italic Venus was commissioned from Antonio Canova to replace the Venus of the Medici requisitioned by Napoleon’s troops in 1802. Throughout the 19th century, and particularly from the second half to the end of the century, Italian sculpting workshops (especially Tuscan and Roman) produced easel and salon reductions in marble or alabaster for Grand Tour travelers, valued for the neoclassical rigor and the delicacy of the drapery.
