SCHÖNE (Wolfgang). Dutch Painting of the 15th Century Leipzig, H. Schmidt & C. Günther, Pantheon-Verlag für Kunstwissenschaft, n.d. (circa 1930). Large in-4, publisher’s binding. A study devoted to early 15th-century Flemish painting, a formative period in Western art exemplified by Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, and Dirk Bouts. The volume, richly illustrated with high-quality photographic plates, analyzes the technical innovations, meticulous realism, and spirituality that characterize the masters of the Low Countries. It constitutes a remarkable testament to German historiography of the interwar period, which was particularly active at the time in the field of medieval and Renaissance art history.
