Santa Justa, Spanish school of Gutiérrez de la Vega, 19th century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions 77 x 59 / 90 x 74 cm. Half-length female figure identifiable as Saint Justa by the palm of martyrdom and the architecture in the background, probably an allusion to the Giralda of Seville. The saint appears enveloped in a flowing, ochre-colored cloak over dark clothing with pink sleeves, her face softly modeled and directed upwards, creating a serene and devotional expression. The composition focuses attention on the elegance of the figure, the refinement of the hands, and the contrast between the pearly flesh tones, the luminous drapery, and the ethereal background. The execution reveals an academic interpretation of a religious subject, with an idealization of the female form, gentle qualities in the light, and a devotional sensibility rooted in the Baroque style, later reworked. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
