His works are known for their dreamlike and often bizarre depictions, merging reality and fantasy. He is especially famous for The Persistence of Memory (1931), in which his famous “melting clocks” become a symbol of the relativity of time and the passing of things. Dalí’s precise, almost hyperrealistic painting style, combined with surreal motifs, made him one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. Dalí’s works closely dialogued with other Surrealists such as René Magritte and Max Ernst. While Magritte, known for paradoxical images like Ceci n’est pas une pipe (1929), also subtly and philosophically questioned the boundaries of reality, Dalí was famous for his exaggerated, often theatrical visual worlds. Max Ernst, another central Surrealist, leaned more toward abstract forms and experimental techniques, such as his frottage technique. Both artists shared with Dalí a fascination with the unconscious and the dreamlike, even though Dalí’s method of realistic depiction made him stand out. A strong influence on Dalí was Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, which also influenced other Surrealists like Joan Miró. While Miró visualized the unconscious with abstract and playful forms, Dalí used Freud’s theories to explore the subconscious in a hyperrealistic style. Particularly in his paranoiac-critical works, such as The Soft Self-Portrait with Cured Bacon (1941), Dalí’s engagement with dream, fear, and psychological conflicts becomes evident. This focus on psychoanalysis anchored Dalí’s work deeply in Surrealism, while he also developed a personal visual language. In the later years of his career, Dalí increasingly turned to scientific and religious themes, similar to Giorgio de Chirico, whose metaphysical painting was also shaped by philosophical and scientific ideas. Works like The Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus) (1954) show Dalí’s interest in religious symbolism combined with scientific concepts, an unusual direction within Surrealism.
