(*) (*) Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí was born in Figueres (Spain) in 1904. Between 1921 and 1925 he studied at the Academia San Fernando in Madrid, where he befriended the poet Federico García Lorca and the filmmaker Buñuel. In 1925 Galerie Dalmau in Barcelona organized his first solo exhibition, which caused Picasso and Miró to take an interest in his work. Dalí was first influenced by Futurism, then by Cubism (1925). In April 1926 Dalí traveled to Paris for the first time where he visited Picasso. On his second trip to Paris, in 1929, he took part in the filming of Buñuel’s film “Un chien Andalou,” for which Dalí was co-screenwriter, and Miró introduced him to the Surrealist group. Dalí met André Breton and … Gala, his future wife and muse (then married to Paul Éluard). He joined the Surrealist movement in 1929. Dalí was interested in Freud’s psychoanalytic theories and defined his method as “paranoiac-critical” (paranóico-crítico). He painted during that period dreamlike and fantastical spaces inhabited by symbolic elements: soft watches, crutches, fantastic animals, distorted figures. Dalí continued to participate in surrealist manifestations and exhibitions after his expulsion in 1934. Dalí interprets various famous works in his own way, such as Millet’s The Angelus, by making several versions of it. Breton sometimes called him “Graag Dolaar”! After the Spanish Civil War he turned to politics in support of Franco. From the 1940s he stated that he wanted to come closer to reality and returned to a more classical painting style, without letting his personal fantasy disappear from his works. Recurring themes in both his painting and graphic work are the woman, sex, religion, the battles. Dalí carried out entertainments in separate performances throughout his career, mixing art and life and constantly placing himself on stage. After ten years of effort, Dalí opened his own museum: in 1974 the inauguration of the Dalí Theatre-Museum took place. His latest passion was the “anamorphic” painting (1975) and he presented his first “hyper-anamorphic” work in New York in 1978. Dalí, who considered himself a “cannibal,” a “megalomaniac” and a “perverse polymorphous” star, died in Barcelona (Spain) in 1989.
