(*) (*) Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí was born in Figueres (Spain) in 1904. Between 1921 and 1925 he studied at the Academia San Fernando in Madrid, where he befriended the poet Federico García Lorca and the filmmaker Buñuel. In 1925 Galerie Dalmau in Barcelona organized his first solo exhibition, which sparked interest from Picasso and Miró in his work. Dalí was initially influenced by Futurism, then by Cubism (1925). In April 1926 he traveled to Paris for the first time, where he visited Picasso. On his second trip to Paris, in 1929, he participated in the cast of Buñuel’s film “Un chien Andalou” for which Dalí co-wrote the screenplay, and Miró introduced him to the Surrealist group. Dalí met André Breton and … Gala, his future wife and muse (then married to Paul Éluard). He joined the Surrealist movement in 1929. Dalí developed an interest in Freud’s psychoanalytic theories and defined his method as “paranóico-crítico” (paranóic-crítico). He painted dreamlike and fantastical spaces populated with symbolic elements: soft watches, stilts, fantastic creatures, twisted characters. Dalí continued to participate in surrealist demonstrations and exhibitions after his expulsion in 1934. Dalí reinterprets several famous works in his own way, such as Millet’s Angelus, by creating several versions of it. Breton even called him “Graag Dolaar”! After the Spanish Civil War he became politically aligned with Franco. From the 1940s he stated that he wanted to come closer to reality and returned to a more classical painting style, without letting his personal fantasy disappear from his works. Recurring themes in both his paintings and his graphic works are women, sex, religion, and battles. Throughout his career Dalí staged occasional performances, mixing art and life and continually placing himself on the stage. After ten years of effort Dalí opened his own museum: the inauguration of the Dalí Theatre-Museum took place in 1974. His latest passion was “anamorfic” painting (1975) and he presented his first “hyper-anamorfic” work in New York in 1978. Dalí, who considered himself a “cannibal,” a “megalomaniac,” and a “perverse polymorphous” star, died in Barcelona (Spain) in 1989.
