Salad servers (6) - .950 silver - 1850-1900 - Original cases

Exceptional lot consisting of two Victorian-style French salad service sets from the late 19th century (Neo-Rococo and Historicist styles), each accompanied by its matching serving fork and spoon. Both sets feature solid silver handles richly chased with natural ivory blades, a noble choice of the era designed to prevent metal interaction with acidic dressings. Both pieces come in their original period cases. 1. High Purity Salad Service (Silver 950) - Joseph Crossard • Material: First-grade silver handles (0.950 fineness), guaranteed by the French head of Minerva hallmark in an octagon. Natural ivory blades carved from natural ivory. • Goldsmith: Joseph Crossard (Paris, active in the late 19th century). • Decoration: Rich repoussé and chased work with vegetal motifs, rocaille, and neoclassical Rococo-style volutes. • Dimensions: Approximately 28 to 30 cm in length. • Case: Original green leatherette-covered cardboard box with gold-embossed edges and light silk and satin lining. 2. Historicist Salad Service (Silver 800) • Material: Second-law silver handles (0.800 fineness), with the French Minerva guarantee punch. Ivory blades in crema color (verified). Hammered goldsmith’s diamond present on the ferrule (to be identified). • Decoration: Historicist engraving with acanthus leaves, flowers, and garlands, finished on curved and domed surfaces. • Dimensions: Approximately 24 to 28 cm in length. • Case: Original period box lined with velvet and satin. Condition Report • The Services (Cutlery): Overall good condition for their age (over 130 years). The silver shows its natural patina, darkening, and light signs of superficial oxidation that are correctable with cleaning, with the reliefs well defined. The ivory displays a warm coloration and natural aging typical of the material, with light age-related spots but no visible cracks or breaks. • The Cases: The 950 silver service case is in good general condition with wear to the brass latch, scuffs and stains on the satin lining. The 800-silver service case is in poor condition (interior partially broken, humidity stains, no hinges, and non-functional clasp), but preserves its historical origin and protective value.
