Dürer depicts the saint bound to a tree, his arms raised above his head, emphasising the physical suffering of the human body in a manner rooted in the Northern European pictorial tradition. In this respect, the composition contrasts with Dürer’s earlier engraving 'Saint Sebastian Bound to the Column' of circa 1499, which reveals a more classical, Italianate approach. – With some skilfully repaired areas of paper thinning and small paper losses.
