FULL TITLE AND AUTHOR Histoire des Camisards. Londres, Chez Moyse Chastel, 1754. S.A. SIGNIFICANCE The Camisard War was one of the last great religious uprisings of pre-revolutionary France. After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the French Protestant community faced restrictions, forced conversions and persecutions. In the Cevennes, a mountainous region in southern France, armed resistance erupted in 1702 and involved peasants, preachers and Protestant fighters called “Camisards.” The work belongs to the vast 18th-century European production that reflected on the political consequences of religious intolerance and the relationship between royal authority and freedom of conscience. BRIEF BIOGRAPHY The author remains anonymous. The work, however, reflects the tradition of historical and polemical writings produced in European Protestant circles in the 18th century, often published outside France to avoid censorial restrictions. The choice of London as the printing location places the volume in the context of the Huguenot diaspora and the international circulation of ideas on religious tolerance. PRINTING HISTORY The edition was printed in London at Moyse Chastel in 1754. Works on the Camisards enjoyed wide circulation among European Protestant circles and contributed to the historical memory of the French religious persecutions. The London production testifies to the role of the English capital as an editorial center for political and religious texts not easily publishable in Catholic territories.
