The reference 5100 occupies a fascinating and almost experimental chapter in Rolex history. Introduced in 1970, it was the manufacture’s first quartz wristwatch, created at a moment when electronic timekeeping appeared destined to redefine the future of Swiss watchmaking. At its heart is the Beta 21, developed by the Centre Electronique Horloger, a consortium bringing together some of Switzerland’s leading manufactures. Rolex adapted the movement as the calibre RE10 and housed it in a watch unlike almost anything else in its catalogue. Its architecture was dictated as much by technology as by design. The substantial Beta 21 required an equally substantial case, resulting in the broad, angular silhouette that would later earn the reference its Italian collector nickname, “Texano”. Executed entirely in 18K yellow gold, the case flows directly into a heavy integrated bracelet, giving the watch an imposing presence of approximately 190 grams. The silvered dial provides a restrained counterpoint, with applied gold baton indexes, central seconds and a date aperture at 3 o’clock beneath a sapphire crystal, itself a notable innovation for Rolex at the time. The reference 5100 was Rolex’s first production watch fitted with sapphire crystal. The present watch is individually numbered 906. Early reference 5100 watches were produced as a numbered series, with the number engraved on the case, further distinguishing them from conventional Rolex production. Contemporary scholarship and auction records generally associate the initial production with approximately 1,000 examples, predominantly in yellow gold. What makes this example especially appealing is the survival of its period ensemble. It is accompanied by its Rolex guarantee, apparently dated 1976, together with period Rolex presentation boxes, booklets and related accessories. The original 18K yellow gold integrated bracelet completes the striking monochromatic architecture of the watch. More than an early quartz curiosity, the reference 5100 captures Rolex at a rare moment of technological experimentation. Its Beta 21 movement, numbered case, immense gold construction and unmistakably 1970s design make the “Texano” one of the most unconventional watches ever to bear the Rolex crown.
