They were completely repainted in the iconic Deutsche Bahn traffic red, including the DB logo on the front and sides. The locomotives retained their original Dutch names (such as the 1616 "Oldenzaal"). They were used daily for so-called Unit Cargo trains (domestic freight trains) from the Kijfhoek marshalling yard to destinations such as Amsterdam, Onnen, Sloe (Vlissingen) and Sittard. Because these locomotives were technically only suitable for the Dutch 1,500V DC network, they could not cross the border into Germany despite their German owner.
