Antique Mahogany Stereoscope – Stereoscope for Glass Plates Format 45x107 mm – France, ca. 1900–1920Description A beautiful, original French hand stereoscope (stereoscope) made of high-quality mahogany, produced in the heyday of early photography (La Belle Époque, ca. 1900–1920). This model is specifically designed for viewing stereoscopic glass negatives and positives in the then immensely popular French format of 45 x 107 mm. This format was introduced in 1893 by the famous French inventor Jules Richard and became the absolute standard for quality 3D photography. The viewer’s exterior is sleek and minimalist. This type was produced by leading French optical workshops in Paris (such as Jules Richard and the UNIS France consortium). The device features a refined focusing mechanism that can be smoothly operated with the metal twist knob on the right side. At the rear there is a folding flap with an matte frosted glass plate and an internal metal pressing spring to hold the glass plates firmly in place and to distribute incoming daylight evenly for optimal, bright 3D viewing. The top lid can be opened and is equipped with a reflector (white flat surface / mirror) to throw additional light onto the glass plate for an optimal, bright 3D experience. The interior is equipped with the characteristic wooden separation shuttle to keep the viewing fields of the left and right eye strictly apart. An iconic and highly decorative piece of early photogra phy, perfect for the serious collector of optical instruments and antique cameras! Specifications: Object: Stereoscope / Stereoscopic viewer Material: Mahogany wood, brass, glass and metal Suitable for: Glass stereoplates of 4.5 x 10.7 cm Period: Ca. 1900–1920 Origin: France (Paris) Operation: Manual focusing via metal twist knob Condition Report In beautiful, original and complete condition with light signs of aging and use appropriate to the age and contributing to the authentic character (see photos).
