He competed in the MotoGP World Championship in the 'premier class' from 2006 to 2012, where he won two World titles, with Ducati in 2007 and with the Repsol Honda Team in 2011, while finishing as runner-up in 2008 (also in 2005 in 250cc), third in 2012, and fourth in 2009 and 2010. In his MotoGP career, Stoner achieved 38 victories, 69 podiums, 39 pole positions, 29 fastest laps and 10 Grand Slams, notable for six wins at the Australian Grand Prix, three in Britain, three in the United States and two in the Netherlands, and he was also Ducati's most victorious rider (23) until Francesco Bagnaia surpassed him in 2024. His race number was 27, which he wore throughout, except in the years after winning the title, when he liked to wear the number 1. His World Championship debut was in 2001, as a wild card for the Telefónica Movistar Jr. Team in three Grands Prix. By 2002, he made his first full season, securing seven wins, twenty podiums and a runner-up in the lower categories; he reached MotoGP in 2006 with Lucio Cecchinello's team, Team LCR. In 2007 he joined Ducati's official team, achieving victory in his first race and becoming world champion that year by winning ten of the eighteen races in the World Championship. In 2011 and 2012 he rode for the factory Honda team, alongside Spanish Dani Pedrosa. In his first season with the Japanese marque he claimed his second world title. On May 17, 2012, he announced at the pre-Grand Prix France press conference his retirement at the end of the season. In 2013 he moved to car racing in the development category of the Australian touring car championship V8 Supercars, the Dunlop V8 Development Series.
