Todas las subastas / Etnográfica / Remarkable Jurassic Perisphinctes Ammonite Cluster...
Fossil specimen with metal base included — This extraordinary specimen features a natural cluster of ammonites of the genus Perisphinctes, beautifully preserved and aggregated in a three-dimensional formation. The fossil shells, of various sizes, display an intricate spiral and well-defined ribbing, testimony to ancient marine life during the Jurassic period. The organic composition of the piece is notable, with individual ammonites blending harmoniously to create a sculptural object of striking visual impact. The exposed surfaces reveal the detailed structure of the shells, with warm, earthy tones that enhance their natural appearance and the deep patina of time. Their growth and interaction within the original rock matrix are evident, offering a precious window into a prehistoric ecosystem. Hailing from Madagascar, an island renowned for its paleontological richness, this cluster of ammonites offers not only fascinating aesthetics but also significant scientific interest. Ammonites were marine cephalopods that inhabited Mesozoic oceans, becoming extinct at the end of the Cretaceous along with the dinosaurs. Their spiral morphology is a classic example of natural engineering, admired by scientists and collectors. The specimen is mounted on a custom metal base, enabling flawless display and highlighting its form and complexity. This piece is not just a fossil, but a true natural sculpture, ideal for enriching a natural history collection, a home or professional environment with a touch of prehistoric elegance. Ammonites of the genus Perisphinctes are characterized by a planispiral shell (coiled on a single plane) and well-developed ribbing ornamentation. These organisms were active predators, equipped with a swimming sac that allowed them to control depth in the water, occupying various ecological niches in Jurassic seas. Any irregularity or color variation visible is part of the fossil’s natural formation and enhances its authenticity and historical charm. This lot represents a unique opportunity to possess a tangible fragment of Earth’s geological past, a museum piece that embodies the beauty and complexity of ancient life.
