Reliquary - Alloy - 1800-1850 - Holy Thorn D.N.J.C

Reliquary Holy Crown of Thorns D.N.J.C – Italy, 19th century Reliquary in gilded alloy, Italian work from the 19th century. The architecturally styled and fully openwork mount presents a rich Baroque decoration of relief Angels, scrolls and foliage, organized around a central theca. The whole, resting on four spiraling feet and topped by a cross, is punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, lending a remarkable polychromy to the gilded decor. The central theca houses a Holy Crown of Thorns, traditionally considered to originate from the Crown of Thorns of Christ. The titulus “D.N.J.C.” stands for Domini Nostri Jesu Christi — “of Our Lord Jesus Christ.” On the back, the theca retains its ecclesiastical red wax seal, still in place. Very beautiful example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, notable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration, and the quality of its craftsmanship. Wear and small, age-appropriate alterations consistent with age and use. Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation.
