Raymond Jacques Brechenmacher (1897–1973). "La tentation de Saint Antoine", 1949. A series of 20 original copperplate engravings (burin engravings) created to illustrate a special edition of the book of the same name by Gustave Flaubert. Éditions du Val-de-Loire, 1949. Large format (33.3 cm x 25.6 cm), 246-[4] pages. Limited edition of 290 numbered copies, comprising 1 copy on pearlescent Japanese paper, 89 copies on Arches paper, and 200 copies on Rives paper. This copy is on Rives paper. Interior in excellent condition. Slipcase shows some rubbing and is slightly open. See photographs. A fine copy. Rather than adopting the language of Surrealism—a style used by Dalí for the same subject in 1946—Brechenmacher approaches the temptations and fantastical creatures from a more traditional perspective, drawing upon 19th-century allegorical, mythological, and Gothic imagery.
