Todas las subastas / Etnográfica / Rare - Bicolor Pen Shell Naturally Colonized by Pink...
atural Marine Assemblage: Giant Pinna bicolor with Spondylus — This extraordinary natural history composition presents a monumental Pinna bicolor shell, the largest bivalve in the Mediterranean, transformed by time and sea into a substrate for a vibrant colony of Spondylus. The specimen, carefully mounted on an elegant antique-style base and protected by a glass dome, evokes the Wunderkammer aesthetic, the ancient cabinets of wonders where science and art merged into a single narrative. The central element is the large Pinna shell, whose elongated, nearly architectural form rises to a considerable height. Its surface, traversed by delicate growth lines, tells the story of its life. The colors range from brownish-purple to softer tones, with areas where natural erosion reveals the underlying mother-of-pearl layer, creating subtle plays of light. The fan shape, elegant and imposing, makes it a true sculpture created by nature. On the surface of the Pinna, a family of Spondylus spp. has taken up residence, forming a fascinating material and color contrast. These bivalves, known as “spiny oysters,” are distinguished by their shells adorned with delicate lamellae and spines, here preserved with notable integrity. Their colors, ranging from deep pink to cream white, stand out against the darker backdrop of the host shell, generating a striking three-dimensional visual effect. The entire composition documents the phenomenon of epibiosis, a biological interaction in which one organism grows on another, crystallized here as an artifact of exceptional aesthetic value. This is not a man-made creation, but an authentic fragment of a marine ecosystem. The calcareous encrustations, traces of marine organisms, and minor irregularities of the surface are not defects but authentic testaments to its biological history. The specimen has been carefully cleaned to enhance its beauty while preserving the integrity of its natural formation. The museum setup, with the black metal support gently surrounding the shell and the turned wooden base with bronze feet, completes its presentation, transforming it into a collection-worthy object of the highest value. Placed in a study, on a bookshelf, or in a design environment, this piece becomes a catalyst for curiosity and admiration. It represents a dialogue between the sculptural perfection of nature and the elegance of human display, joining the fascination of malacology with the refinement of an art object. It is an invitation to contemplate the complexity and beauty of marine life forms, a piece for conversation that enriches any natural history collection or prestigious interior.
