Frankreich, Ende 19. Jahrhundert. Bronze, gegossen, ziseliert und patiniert, feuervergoldet. Auf einem quadratischen, gestuften Sockel aus Marmor mit applizierten Löwenmasken-Handhaben erhebt sich der vasenförmige Korpus. Dieser ist umlaufend reich verziert mit Reliefs von geflügelten Frauenmasken, flankiert von Lorbeergirlanden und Medaillons mit antikisierenden Profilbildnissen. Seitlich hochgezogene, kannelierte Henkel, bekrönt von sitzenden Sphingen. Der ausgestellte Rand mit Palmettenfries. H: ca. 46 cm. Guter Erhaltungszustand, leichte Altersspuren, Vergoldung stellenweise berieben. Die Komposition und die Ikonographie dieser Vase sind ein exzellentes Beispiel für den Historicismus des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, der die prunkvollen Formen des Empire-Stils (um 1810) wiederbelebte. Die Verwendung einer tiefschwarzen Patina und die Art der Vergoldung sprechen für eine Entstehung in dieser späteren Periode, wobei die handwerkliche Qualität der Ziselierung die Bewunderung für das Originaldekor der Zeit Napoleons I. zeigt. | Magnificent Empire Style Centrepiece with Sphinx Handles France, late 19th century. Cast, chased, patinated and fire-gilded bronze.The impressive vase-shaped body rises from a square, stepped marble base fitted with applied lion-mask handles. Richly decorated in relief throughout, the body features winged female masks framed by swags of laurel and medallions with Classical profile portraits inspired by Antiquity. The high, fluted side handles are surmounted by seated sphinxes, while the flared rim is embellished with a finely chased palmette frieze. Height: approx. 46 cm. Good overall condition with minor age-related wear; the fire gilding is lightly rubbed in places.The composition and iconography of this vase represent an outstanding example of the late 19th-century Historicist revival of the Empire style, echoing the monumental decorative vocabulary of the Napoleonic period (c. 1810). The combination of deep black patination and fire-gilded ornament is characteristic of this later revival, while the exceptional quality of the chasing demonstrates the admiration for the refined decorative arts produced during the reign of Napoleon I.
