MAGNIFICENT and Historic testimony of the Campaign of France 1814 and the Russian exactions. [Victory of MONTEREAU of NAPOLEON] ( Historical context: letter dated Nemours, February 21, 1814, at the heart of the invasion of France by the Allied armies (Cossacks in Gâtinais, in the Nemours–Sens–Montargis region). Surrender demand of the fortress by 6000 Cossacks on Tuesday the 15th, refused by the commander. Evacuation on the 19th following Napoleon's victory ) During the Campaign of France, faced with the invasion of the Coalition forces (Austrians, Cossacks and Württembergers), the town of Nemours was a strategic resistance point. ) Nemours, February 21 [Feb.] 1814 " Sir, my heart no longer feels that painful sentiment (bitterness and horror), that tightening movement that pressed on it so painfully: it is no longer troubled by the hideous sight of those COLOSSUSES WITH FLATTENED NOSES, SQUARE INCLUDED FACES OF COPPER COLOR and whose fierce features caused terror. Thanks to God, I breathe and the air that leaves my lungs is no longer compressed by fear. The messengers I sent from all sides announce that this ferocious horde is in full retreat: they are heading towards Sens & Villeneuve le Roi. Gatinais is no longer infested, Montargis is evacuated, finally all our surroundings are ruined but the iron hand that oppressed them no longer exists, I hope we are delivered from them forever. Tuesday the 15th of the current month, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, 6000 COSSACKS gathered on the height that overlooks us to the south of the town, with 7 cannons. They sent a negotiator to demand the surrender. Major Grumault who commanded the place replied that he had orders to defend it, that however if you would grant him a delay he would go take the orders of General Montbrun at Moret. The enemy seemed to consent and withdrew; half an hour later he sent his volley: this aggression surprised us but did not overwhelm us. The combat continued until night. We had two batteries dismantled by the loss of a gunner and several wounded. A lieutenant of the national guard was killed by a ball, and several fusiliers, amounting to 6, were badly wounded. The next day at 2 in the morning the enemy attacked us again, he killed and wounded 3 to 4 men and set fire to the door of the town, Pont de Paris. Major Grumault, seeing that he could no longer hold out, asked to capitulate: the garrison was taken as prisoners of war. I presented myself in the name of the town to also make my capitulation; I said to General PLATOW, his reputation had preceded him here and I knew he was noble and generous, I asked him to respect our persons and our property. He offered his hand to me and gave his solemn word. At the very instant all the town’s houses were occupied by the multitude of COSSACKS at his orders: they were fed with good meals and especially eau-de-vie. At 10 o'clock the troupe’s commissary inflicted enormous requisitions in provisions, bread and meat, hay and oats and straw [and] wine: mustard, eau-de-vie, liqueur, wine, coffee, sugar, rice, fat, soap, candles, leather for boots, cloth, canvas, muskets, pistols, sabers, powder, lead of all kinds, fodder for 1000 horses, straw, hay… Thursday morning, at 6 o’clock a colonel, and a Hungarian aide-de-camp carried me off for about 3000 francs of blue and gray cloth: - I have never seen anything more arrogant and more foolish than these two men. - Friday at 10 in the morning, Joseph Dalzel, Austrian squadron leader, presented himself at the Commune; he politely made a requisition for 200 rations of bread and meat, as much hay and oats and straw [and] wine: he asked me for a guide to take him to Montereau. The Russians established three posts at Nemours the same day, and demanded several guides on horseback: they were in constant motion and seemed frightened: we heard all day the sound of cannon, and the news of a battle won by the EMPEROR spread; we attributed these movements to that news but with no certainty. On Saturday morning [note: February 19, 1814] the Russians entirely evacuated the town and withdrew until the following Sunday. If the leaders had not exacted such heavy requisitions we would have no serious complaints to make against this unruly troop; it treated well, committed some thefts but it respected the WOMEN."
