North America, United States, Alaska, Pleistocene Epoch. A set of four fossil mammoth molars, each mounted upright on a custom hardwood base with the grinding surface facing forward. The occlusal surfaces show the parallel enamel ridges, or lamellae, typical of Mammuthus, separated by softer dentine and cementum that wore faster and kept the surface rough for grinding grasses. Coloring ranges from tan to dark brown as a result of mineral staining during burial. A mammoth used six molars in each quarter of the jaw over its lifetime, and each new tooth moved forward from the rear to replace the worn one ahead of it. Item # 205096
