"En tremblant" is French and means "trembling". This term refers to a special technique in which individual parts of a larger piece of jewellery, usually flowers or leaves of a brooch, are set on small springs. Movable pieces of jewellery have been around since ancient times. To this day, earrings, for example, are divided into individual sections that are connected to each other by eyelets, allowing them to swing slightly with every movement of the wearer. However, the technique of "en tremblant" was not developed until the middle of the 18th century. These pieces of jewellery do not swing but vibrate, they tremble slightly and continuously due to their spring-loaded mounting. The result is an even more beautiful interplay with the light, and the reflections of the gemstones create a veritable firework display thanks to this sophisticated art of craftsmanship. This brooch from around 1960 demonstrates this masterfully. Designed as a loose wreath, it is composed of 96 diamonds of fine quality, which together weigh more than eleven carats. In addition to classic brilliant-cut diamonds, we see baguette-cut diamonds arranged in fine bands. Among other things, navette-cut diamonds form flower shapes which, when mounted on springs, actually begin to tremble at the slightest breath of air, demonstrating their radiance. According to the maker's mark on the pinning and the gold inscription on the inside lid of the casket, the piece of jewellery comes from the Julius Hügler goldsmiths in Vienna, who also had branches in Salzburg, Bad Gastein and Rio de Janeiro in addition to their headquarters on the Danube. The high quality of Hügler's work not only impressed the House of Habsburg, who appointed him court jeweller in 1899. The company is still run by the family today and was able to supply illustrious customers in the 20th century, including Soraya and the Shah of Persia. Even Richard Burton had a brooch designed by Hügler, which became a love gift to Liz Taylor. Our precious piece from Hügler is very well preserved in its original case and is as collectible as it is admirably beautiful. The brooch came to us from Vienna and comes with a detailed appraisal.
