Extremely beautiful and rare antique French "boîte à timbres" from the late 19th century (circa 1870–1890). It is made of Bois Durci, an early and sought-after organic bioplastic based on wood pulp. This multifunctional desk accessory combines a graceful pen holder at the front with a hinged box. The interior features four specially shaped compartments with a sloped, curved bottom, designed at the time to easily slide stamps from the compartment with the fingertip. The box is beautifully decorated in French neo-rococo / early Art Nouveau style with organic waves and scroll motifs and refined floral details on the lid. The four conical feet on the underside are integral cast-in, which is characteristic of the authenticity of this pressed material. Length is 16.0 cm. Width is 11.0 cm. Height is 4.5 cm. Weight is 483.0 grams. After decades of careful collecting I have decided to part with (part of) my collection. I wish these special objects a place with a new enthusiast who understands the value of historical preservation. It is time these pieces receive the attention they deserve, so that they are preserved for the distant future as well. I ensure extremely careful packaging and insured shipping.
