These objects in the image are tin spoons from the 17th century. Such spoons were popular among the bourgeois for daily use. Earlier models (late 16th to early 17th century) more often had a teardrop-shaped bowl. The handle: The handle is straight and has a six-sided or diamond-shaped edge, which is a typical feature of this period. Maker's mark: In the bowl, near the base of the handle, a stamp is visible. This is often a rose mark under a crown, sometimes bearing the initials of the tin smith. This mark served as a quality guarantee for the tin used. Historical Context Material: Tin spoons were cast in moulds. Because pure tin is very soft, a small percentage of lead was often added for strength. Patina: The dark, grayish color of the spoon is called patina. This is a natural oxide layer that protects the metal over the centuries.
